Hanks of dyed yarn in teal, grey, rust and red

Studio · Design and development

Colour starts here.

A mill that designs keeps its own library, draws its own weaves and can show a cloth on screen before a single metre is woven.

The library

5,000+

designs on record, across 2,400 qualities.

Every design we have developed is kept with its construction, so a cloth a buyer liked seasons ago can be found, rewoven or recoloured instead of being reinvented from a cutting.

It is also where a new range starts: from a buyer's reference, a colour story, or a structure we want to try.

Software we built

We see the cloth before we weave it.

We built our own weave-design software. It drafts the structure, lays out the stripe or check, recolours it and renders the cloth — so colourways can be compared on screen before any yarn is committed.

What the studio does

Four parts of the work.

  • 01

    Weaves

Structures drafted and checked on screen before a warp is made.

  • 02

    Colourways

One design, recoloured into a range, with every colourway kept against the original.

  • 03

    Stripe plans

Warp and weft sequences for stripes and checks, drawn to the thread.

  • 04

    Swatch cards and hangers

How a range reaches a buyer's desk — and how we show it at fairs.
